FAQ’s

Here are some answers to FAQ’s:

How many people can go on a trip?

The boat is a 20′ center console and is limited to three customers per trip. Additionally, Capt. Avery will be on board, however there will not be a first mate.

Salty Fly's boat, the Gravy, a 20' center console

Do you only take fly fishing trips?

No, I offer light tackle spinning gear as well. However, no treble hooks! I only use lures with single barb-less hooks.

How long are the trips?

Trips are 4 hours long. A lot of fishing happens in 4 hours as you are fishing within minutes of leaving the dock.

My wife, friend, child doesn’t like to fish… should they come along?

The answer is yes. The boat is comfortable and I enjoy sharing history and more about Barnstable Harbor with anyone interested in hearing it. Of course, your companion has to want to come along for the ride!

Is there a head (toilet) on board?

Nope. However, we are usually just 10-15 minutes away from the dock in an emergency situation.

Do you offer spaces on group trips?

No, my trips are booked by a single client (with up to 3 anglers/trip).

Do you practice catch and release?

Yes, 99.9% of the fish caught on board my boat are released. Occasionally/ rarely, a client may opt to keep one 28″-31″ striped bass for the grill.

What do I need to bring?

Hat, sunglasses, appropriate clothing are required. Rain gear if showers are in the forecast.

Salty Fly can provide all the gear and tackle for fly or light tackle fishing. However, you are welcome to bring your own fly rods and flies if you’d like.

Massachusetts Saltwater Fishing Licenses are not required when you are fishing with me. My “For Hire” permit covers you.

May I bring my own Saltwater Fly Rods and if so, what ones should I bring?

I recommend an 8 or 9 weight fly rod with an intermediate line. For more detailed information, CLICK HERE!

How far do you travel before to fish?

Most days we start fishing within 10-15 minutes of casting off from the dock. Some days we have to travel a bit farther, but you will be fishing for most of the duration of a 4 hour trip.

I am uncomfortable on a rocky and rolling boat, should I go fishing with you?

Typically we fish in the relatively calm waters of Barnstable Harbor and nearby Cape Cod Bay, nevertheless, conditions can change suddenly. If just a little bit of rock & roll puts you on edge, I’d recommend fishing from the beach.

What if I book a trip and I my plans change? Will I lose my deposit?

You will receive a full refund for your deposit for cancellations up to 14 days before the trip.

Weather cancellations are at the discretion of Captain Avery. If your charter is cancelled due to poor weather conditions (fish love the rain!) and we are unable to reschedule your trip then your deposit will be fully refunded.
